Logging in fails

FAQ Entry #10
Problem:

You attempt to log into Moodle, but Moodle reports that your username or password are incorrect.

This can be caused by many possible problems related to your account or the systems in the department.

Solution:

If you do not know what your login details are, please see this FAQ entry.

Moodle uses your School of CS username and password, and attempts to authenticate you against the School's LDAP system. If you recieve a message telling you that your login is incorrect or invalid, the first step you should take is to attempt to log into another machine (preferably a linux machine, for example connect to rs0.cs.man.ac.uk via ssh) in the school.

  • If you obtain any kind of system error when attempting to log into rs0.cs.man.ac.uk via ssh (for example, reports that the system can not mount your home directory), the system may be experiencing transient networking issues. Try logging in again later, if the problem persists please contact CSIS/dutyoffice and provide them with your username and any errors you encountered while trying to log in.
  • If you can not log into a machine in the school using your username and password, then there is a problem with your username or password. Please contact CSIS to reset or obtain your login details. The moodlesupport staff can not assist with username and password reset requests.
  • If you can log into a machine in the school, try to use the same credentials to log into Moodle via the web interface. If these fail, please contact moodlesupport.
